You can’t know where this is headed.
The signaling is that we might keep taking one step forward and half a step back.
Maybe we’re opening up more.
Closing down more.
Perhaps the economy will sputter.
Or roar back to life.
It’s unknowable.
Question is…
Where are you at?
I see people are basically in one of three gears—
- Idle
- Just driving along
- Driving forward
Where do you consider yourself right now?
Idle is an easy place to get stuck right now.
Those people are waiting and seeing.
Perhaps wasting hours a day trying to get clear on where it’s headed so they can too.
They’ll remain stuck.
Others are driving along, doing their zoom calls, taking care of what needs to be done.
They’re in a good enough place, but lack direction.
Then, well, you know where I’m headed…
Driving forward means…
Driving a car you want to keep your eye on the mirrors but you mostly want to be focused on what’s ahead.
Certainly you want to be looking around seeing what’s happening around you, but you also want to avoid distraction.
Keeping your eye on the road ahead is how you’re safely getting where you’re headed.
Where are you headed?
Where is your focus right now?
What things are consuming your attention?
How much direction do you have?
What might you do to keep shifting your focus to better driving forward?
What leads you to find another gear?
Remember this gorgeous piece of artwork I shared with you last week?
It reminds you that you don’t need to get all the way from first to sixth, just to shift up one more gear.
So, those people who are stuck in idle, how do they find first, and then second?
Then, wherever you’re at, what leads you to shift up another gear?
Asking a client this question last week he said two things.
The first he said is having more clarity on where you’re headed.
As we talked about, you can’t know where the world is headed, but you can give yourself clearer direction.
The second he said is…
And this is worthy of a sub-heading…
Believing you can drive forward
See, my point here is that…
If you’re stuck in idle looking at all the hard things in the world it’s easy to talk yourself out of having direction.
Well, how do I know where we’ll be?
What if this or that does or doesn’t happen?
Ultimately, there are lots of variants of this idea that come back to the real sticking point—
How do you know that your efforts will pay off?
You don’t!
So stop thinking about that!!
Merely, know that sitting in idle or a low gear, those little efforts certainly get you next to nowhere.
Yet just finding more focus and a higher gear, not only gets you driving forward better…
But it also builds that belief.
Gets you in your zone of just driving where it’s easier to stay focused on the road ahead.
Keep driving, my friend!
btw, I will say again, what’s helped me so much on this is re-doing my masterclass for Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, and can’t recommend enough this free video program!
