“When it pours it pours,” a client says.
He of course gets that’s the “wrong” phrase.
But it’s the right phrase for him.
He remembers what it was like the other way.
And now he ONLY wants to remind himself of how much more you can keep it pouring!
Stuck begets stuck
Earlier in his career.
When he was first building his business, he felt stuck.
“Actually, it was way worse than stuck,” he says.
“It was like I couldn’t get a win edgeways.”
He was working harder than ever.
“Hustling” harder than ever.
But it wasn’t enough.
And worse.
Feeling like nothing was working…
Like a car stuck in the mud, spinning wheels, he felt himself getting stuck more and more.
“Sinks down” fast
“You can visualize that car,” he put it to me.
He then described in muddy detail the make and model of the car he could see.
That in itself was telling—older model, getting a little tired.
Revving harder.
Wheels spinning faster.
Car sinking deeper.
“Those were dark days,” he confessed.
But then he got “lucky.”
One customer came through that changed his business.
And it also helped him see how much he’d laid the groundwork.
“It’s the pipes you lay”
Is how he thinks of it.
For all the time he was working away, he was never just taking random action.
He’d been laying in the ground the foundation for building his business.
“And, unfortunately, in business,” he said…
“You might have to build the method to reach a million customers just to get one.”
Just like Amazon had to build out all that infrastructure just to sell one customer one book.
“But, once you get it flowing,” he says.
“Now those flooding pipes keep it pouring more and more.”
Ad hockery
Was word of the day a few weeks back.
It means having no method to your madness.
Just doing things randomly hoping to drive results.
Certainly it works.
“You could build a car that way,” he said to me.
“But to make car after car you want a production line!”
That’s how you go from selling one car or one book or one customer..
To building momentum serving more and more.
Building repeatable method
When doing the groundwork…
Laying the pipes…
It can feel like slow going.
Perhaps even take you months, years, decades…
To get it all connected up for driving the results you want.
But, once you do…
Well, that’s like Amazon setting up the store to sell one customer one book.
Once all that’s in place.
Like Bezos can sell every customer EVERYTHING…
You’ve got a method for driving momentum more and more.
For driving more and more momentum
“Just like stuck begets stuck, when it pours it pours is a metaphor for how momentum begets momentum,” he says.
Certainly, when you lack momentum it can feel frustrating.
Scary too.
You’re wondering if all these things you’re doing will pay off for you.
“But, if you keep laying your pipes,” he says.
“You only need to keep trudging through mud long enough until the results start flowing through.”
Once they do.
Once you have a method that works.
Now you can flood those pipes!
And, as he says, “Keep it pouring more and more.”
How might you use this?
I have no idea!
With clients I share his story all the time.
It’s a powerful reminder that the things you’re doing might not pay off right away.
But, if you can “just” stay focused on building your winning method.
Once it’s working for you…
Well, now you can get it working for you more and more.
I’ve seen this with countless professionals building their career and business.
You can run around burning TONS of time in ad hockery, getting so-so results.
Or build repeatable method that optimizes your results more and more.
How’s your method look?
You might feel like you’re pushing it as hard as you can.
But, can your method be tweaked for better driving forward?
Is your method spinning your wheels?
Keeping you feeling more and more stuck?
Or, even if you’re not YET seeing the results you want…
Do you feel like you are laying the pipes that will not just get it pouring…
But will keep it pouring more and more?
P.S. If you want to discuss your winning method, I’ve made more time available the next 2 weeks to do free strategy sessions you can schedule here.
