I don’t know what you’re focused on achieving.
But I do know whatever you’re focused on this is true.
You keep achieving what you truly want when you keep moving forward.
Sometimes this is the hardest thing in the world to do. Even just the tiniest step forward can feel too difficult.
Your brain can get stuck thinking, what about this or that? Should you do one thing or the other? What about this or that outcome?
Resistance
One of the most helpful books I read was the War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
If you know this book you know exactly why it is celebrated by people doing hard things.
It was most helpful to me writing my first book when it felt near-impossible to even sit down and write, let alone make progress.
I had never struggled in that way. In the past I just powered through any actions driving things forward but back then finding myself stuck in actions I didn’t know what to do.
Blow through that resistance is what you must do.
Get over thinking
Over-thinking.
Procrastination.
Distraction. Brain seeking novelty. Whatever you call it…
Your brain will do just about anything to avoid taking action at times and you must find a way through.
This is what Pressfield labels resistance. And as he says, “Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.”
Resist resistance
Fear.
More or less everything that holds you back as a human is fear.
It’s your brain thinking about how taking this action will feel worse and lead to a worse outcome, so it keeps resisting.
Problem is what you resist persists, the worse it feels and this is where stuckness can spiral down into worse symptoms like debilitating anxiety or depression, and lead you to avoid taking actions, ultimately failing in the end.
Resist this.
Keep moving
Whatever you’re focused on, keep moving.
Especially if it’s hard like apparently Churchill said, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”
Yes it can be easier said than done and also it can be easier done than said when you stop listening to that inner voice or those feelings of stuckness and just absorb in taking your best next action.
Over decades I’ve built rigorous methods for doing your hardest things like House of Flow and Rocket To The Top Like Musk And Bezos but the most simple thing you can do is absorb in your next tiniest step.
Even if you just set a timer for 33 minutes and take your next action you’re never stuck so long as you keep moving.
